GOSFORD QUARRIES GLENORIE WORKSHOP
Our Glenorie, NSW factory has some of the southern hemisphere’s most advanced cutting and profiling technology. We pride ourselves on being the innovative leaders in sandstone, dedicated to research and development, which improves our industry.
This gem is also home to some of the most skilled Masons in Australia.
Gosford Quarries is reviving a dying stonemasonry trade by being the largest employer of Australian apprentice stonemasons from Miller TAFE.
Our Banker stonemasons have decades of experience nationally and internationally; their attention to detail is second to none, as seen in projects such as the detailed ANZAC Cannon, which sits proudly on the grounds of Glenorie RSL.
GOSFORD QUARRIES SOMERSBY
Our Somersby Workshop on the Central Coast of NSW boasts some of the oldest techniques used in the sandstone industry.
Our workshop has evolved to include some of the finest and latest state-of-the-art technologies for nearly one hundred years while still maintaining authenticity and utilising more traditional and rare methods, like our infamous Gang Saws.
Our technology and experienced operating staff make Gosford Quarries a highly efficient processor and producer of Australian sandstone.
The merger between Gosford Quarries and Sarkis Bros has allowed us to improve processing lead time by combining both workshops. This is considered one of the biggest advantages for our valued clients as time efficiency is of utmost importance.

Exploring the Rich Quarry Network of Gosford Quarries
Gosford Quarries has access to some of Australia’s most resource-rich quarries, which allows us to produce various quality products.
A few of our quarries include:

MOUNT WHITE QUARRY
Mt White Quarry is located on the central coast of NSW. The region is rich in sandstone resources, and its unique geological formation provides some of the best-quality sandstone in Australia.
No other quarry produces a variety of colours and of Mt White’s quality. For years, its sandstone has become a benchmark for architects and specifiers to assess the colours and quality of banded sandstone.
Modern architectural styles seek to incorporate new materials with dynamic textures and colours, which is where our Mt White Range excels. With almost unlimited resources, Gosford quarries have used the Mt White Range on buildings around Australia and internationally in China, North America, and the Middle East.

PILES CREEK QUARRY
Our quarries include historic gems such as our Piles Creek Quarry, Central Coast NSW, which produces our beautiful oxidising ranges; Piles Creek Guinea Gold and Piles Creek Cream are greatly sought-after for historic Australian restoration works and modern structures.
Piles Creek sandstone has been used on several Sydney buildings, including new construction and restoration. Some examples where considerable quantities were used include the new entry pediment to Sydney Grammar School, Sydney Town Hall House, St Mary Cathedral’s east and south façade restoration, the Hilton Hotel on George St, Governor Phillip Tower, and The Parliament House of Victoria.

Pattons Quarry
Established | 1960
Stone | Dimension
Location | Central Coast, New South Wales Applications | Heritage, civil, landscape, residential and restoration
Used on major landmarks such as the Sydney GPO (Debden), the golden-coloured stone resembles the stone from the original Pyrmont Quarry in Sydney, hence its application to heritage buildings. This is one of the company’s oldest quarries and is now mainly used for residential, commercial, and landscaping work.
This diverse quarry was the source of the A-grade oxidizing Debden stone, which is primarily reserved for restoration work, and one of the only quarries that occasionally produces extremely rare, absolutely white stone. Debden stone is named after the road of the same name that runs alongside the quarry. The lifespan is expected to be another 50 years.

East Kurrajong
Established | 1980
Stone | Aggregate and dimension stone
Location | East Kurrajong, New South Wales Applications | Mixed use.
East Kurrajong, at the foothills of the Blue Mountains, produces high-quality brown banded stone used primarily for domestic and civil landscaping and on selected commercial buildings. This quarry was targeted originally for aggregate stone, but some dimension has been found. The lifespan is expected to be another 20–30 years.
Cattai
Established | 1968
Stone | Mostly aggregate; some dimension stone
Location | Cattai, New South Wales
Applications | Mainly civil jobs – road bases and crushed materials
This quarry was targeted originally for aggregate stone, but some dimension has been found. This quarry also produced a grey specked, salt tolerant stone widely used in marine environments The lifespan is expected to be another 20–30 years.

Beaudesert
Established | 2000
Stone | Dimension
Location | Beaudesert, Queensland Applications | Landscaping
Although mainly used for landscaping, the stone from this Queensland quarry is known as a dimension quarry, because it offers A-grade stone that can be used across a range of applications.
The stone is a biscuit-grey plain colour.

WONDABYNE QUARRY
Established | 1922
Stone | Dimension; Grey
Location | Central Coast, New South Wales Applications | Heritage and restoration.
One of our unique Quarries is Wondabyne, Central Coast NSW, one of Australia’s most remotely located quarries. This unique quarry is only accessible by barge or train and is Australia’s oldest operating sandstone quarry. Due to its difficult positioning and limited access, blocks are extracted only a few times a year.
Wondabyne stone has been used on Australia’s most historically significant institutional buildings, such as the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
As the supply of Pyrmont’s iconic golden stone declined, Wondabyne Grey became the new dominant stone. When Sydney’s famous money-box Commonwealth Bank building in Martin Place was under construction, six railway trucks per day left Wondabyne, loaded with stone for the Johnston Street, Annandale supply yard. From there it was sent to the various buildings under construction, including the David Jones buildings, Gowings, Challice House, and the MLC building in Martin Place.
Wondabyne is the oldest operating sandstone quarry in Australia and arguably the most historic, being registered by The National Trust. An unassuming and difficult-to-reach quarry alongside the Sydney–Central Coast railway line, it will be familiar to many travellers, but its historical significance may be little known.
Blocks are extracted only a few times a year due to the difficult positioning and access only by barge or train. It is the source of stone used on some of Australia’s most historic and important buildings, such as the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
Wondabyne is lauded for its durability and stability, hence its continued use to restore heritage buildings. Pyrmont was lauded as the pinnacle of sandstone quality and look, but as buildings such as the Stock Exchange in Bond Street and St Mary’s Cathedral’s spires show, the city is dotted with buildings of Wondabyne that should have more predominance.

Sydney CBD Quarries
180 George Street, 200 George Street, 1 Alfred Street
Innovative Urban Quarrying
When we think of quarries, we usually envision large-scale sites in regional areas. However, one of Gosford Quarries’ recent innovations has been the successful extraction of stone from building sites in the heart of the Sydney CBD.
Unearthing Hidden Treasures at 200 George Street
Traditionally, excavated material from building sites is crushed and discarded offsite. At 200 George Street, near Circular Quay, geotechnical reports identified the presence of rare, high-quality Yellow Block sandstone. Rather than waste such a valuable resource, the developer called in Gosford Quarries. Our team developed new processes and technologies to extract this otherwise discarded stone.
This site alone yielded more than 2,500 cubic metres of some of the most beautiful Yellow Block sandstone the country has ever seen. The stone was cut, sorted, profiled, and labelled before being transported to our Somersby Central Coast factory, where it was stored for a couple of years. It was later used as cladding on the new 200 George Street building and in the remarkable lobby mural that tells the story of the land and its Indigenous history.
Expanding the Success to 180 George Street and 1 Alfred Street
Following the initial find at 200 George Street, Gosford Quarries was called to conduct onsite extractions at nearby sites, including 180 George Street and 1 Alfred Street. This stone is now safely stored at Gosford Quarries’ factory, earmarked for future heritage and restoration use.
A New Dimension to Urban Quarrying
This pioneering investment in machinery allows for fast extraction without delaying developers or builders, providing Sydney with new sources of high-quality stone. It’s also an environmental success story, offering natural products that would have otherwise been discarded.
Onsite extraction, storage, manufacture, and delivery back to a site for construction add an entirely new dimension to Gosford Quarries’ business. It also provides a unique story for the buildings from which the stone is sourced, giving Gosford Quarries a significant edge over competitors.
Preserving Heritage with Yellow Block Stone
The Yellow Block stone from 200 George Street is particularly prized for heritage restoration. Due to its scarcity, some of this stone was used for city area restoration projects within months of extraction. The remaining stone has been reserved for future projects that demand the highest quality stone possible.
