The Gosford Quarries Sparrow Pecked, Convict Pick, Boasted & Chiselled Sandstone Finishes
The difference between all four of these technical names and styles is the degree of punching/pitting of the face of the stone as well as the tools which are used to achieve these finishes.
These are incredibly labour-intensive Sandstone Finishes and are still traditionally done by hand, by a skilled stonemason who uses various hammers, bolsters and chisels to achieve the beautiful indented texture in the face of the stone.
The most common and typically requested finishes of these are the Sparrow Pecked Sandstone Finish and the Convict Picked Sandstone Finish varieties.
Sparrow Pecked Finishes in Sandstone Heritage Restoration
The origins of this texture lay in the architectural sandstone masonry of our national historic buildings and throughout the world as it is a traditional method of surface finishing for natural stonework.
The Sparrow Pecked Sandston Finish is a traditional surface finish created using a hammer and chisel by the stonemason and, as such, each stone will be distinctly different from each other stone because of the mason’s individual technique.
The Sparrow Peck mason technique was developed and refined by stonemasons initially working the split faces of rough quarry blocks to create rectangular prisms for further working into smooth surfaces (historically to create a smooth surface finish from a quarry block was the highest order of a mason’s work, these days surfaces are sawn smooth as part of the primary production of a finished sandstone piece).
If the surface is to remain textured (not to be made a flat surface) then ‘sparrow pecking’ or ‘punching’ is one of many surface finishes that can be used as the decorative finish. The texture can be further enhanced by using a ‘draft margin’ to the perimeter of the stone to highlight the chisel texture.
The margins of the sandstone can be smooth or chiselled lightly to create a different but complementary texture of the stone edges.
Many of Sydney’s historic buildings and those of other states in Melbourne, Brisbane, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra, all feature the famous ‘Sparrow Pecked’ and “Convict Picked” Sandstone Finishes.
The surfaces of our timeless sandstone buildings are remembered by the textures of our incredibly talented Australian stonemasons (and early convict settlers) and the tools they used to refine and shape the sandstone blocks in thousands of famous landmark buildings around the country.
‘Sparrow Pecking’ or ‘Punched’ Sandstone Finishes are decorative surface finishes used in all the heritage buildings of Australia.
Convict Picked, Sparrow Pecked or Pointed Heritage Sandstone Finishes
‘Convict Picked’ or ‘Pointed Finish’ are two terms you may hear when referring to the Sparrow Peck Sandstone Finish historically.
Many of our Sandstone Blocks in heritage buildings were actually hewn by convicts, hence the name ‘Convict Picked’ and a ‘point’ is the name of the chisel most likely used by the convict or stonemason.
Over time, our historic buildings may need alterations, repairs and replacements to their surfaces, where upgrades or structural improvements or changes have been decided upon or commissioned.
In these instances, it is not only important to match the colour of the sandstone, but equally crucial to execute the same finish or texture so the replacement stone blends into the existing sandstone heritage façade without being visually obvious.

Gosford Quarries Experts in Sandstone Heritage Restoration and Bespoke Sandstone Finishes
Sometimes people mistakenly assume that Sandstone Heritage Finishes cannot be accurately reproduced and executed today.
In fact, all Heritage Sandstone Finishes are able to be expertly executed in the present day. So much so, they are basically indistinguishable from the Sandstone Finishes of the older Sandstone Blocks they have replaced.
Gosford Quarries’ state-of-the-art technology paired with our highly skilled banker stonemasons can produce a vast and intricate variety of heritage pieces and Sandstone Finishes to match existing Heritage Sandstone Finishes and to create bespoke new Sandstone Finishes newly created in the modern day.
Highlighting the Sparrow Pecked Sandstone Finish with Margins
The Sparrow Pecked Sandstone Finish and Convict Picked Sandstone Finish can be outlined with a smooth Sandstone Finish as a Margin Border (usually pitched off or cut away to appear like the edges have been bevelled, recessed or set back).
The Margined Border frames the Sparrow Pecked internal surface contrasting, accentuating and highlighting the textured “Pecked Face” of the Sandstone Cladding, Sandstone Capping or Sandstone Walling product.
You can see this particular Sparrow Pecked Sandstone Finish in the image left.
The expert team at Gosford Quarries take pride in every stage of the sandstone production process to ensure all our sandstone is made with precision and care.
At Gosford Quarries you are guaranteed the best quality Australian sandstone and expert craftsmanship on every project.

The Sparrow Pecked Sandstone Finish in the Modern Day of Heritage Restoration
The Sparrow Pecked and Convict Picked Finishes are not exclusive to the heritage sector.
This beautiful pitted finish is highly sought in modern residential and commercial projects.
The nature, texture, and degree of Sparrow Pecking indentation can be customised for each project as this Sandstone Finish is produced by hand.
Depending on your preference for texture and degree of pitted facade appearance, this finish can be applied to a sawn (smooth) face or a natural split face.
The Sparrow Pecked and Convict Picked Finishes are most commonly requested for Sandstone Fireplaces, Sandstone Feature Walls, Sandstone Wall Cladding and Facades, Sandstone Fences, Sandstone Pier Columns, Foundation Stone Cladding and even Sandstone Solid Wall Blocks.
Sparrow Pecked and Convict Picked Sandstone Finishes are Hand-Worked Skilled Masonry Finishes
This is a bespoke hand-rendered or manual Sandstone Finish and, as such, is a premier finish at its price point.
Heritage Finishes take care, time, patience, skill and concentration to ensure the finish is right and matches the surrounding Heritage Sandstone Blocks; the sandstone ‘family’ it will belong to.
When you speak of iconic historic facades of our beloved buildings, the restored surface finishes must be executed with incredible attention to detail and with the highly skilled artistry of professional stonemasons of our modern day.
Gosford Quarries have been in the industry and have been supplying sandstone to these buildings for over 100 years.
This means that many of the original buildings which feature Australian sandstone would have been shaped and created by Gosford Quarries’ very own stonemasons, using Gosford Quarries Quality Australian sandstone.
In turn, heritage architects, Government and Public works authorities trust Gosford Quarries above all other suppliers for heritage restoration work.
Boasted and Chiselled Finishes in Sandstone Heritage Restoration
Understanding Boasted Finishes
What Makes Boasted Unique
A boasted finish is characterised by a smooth surface with irregular parallel lines. This finish is achieved by using a broad, flat chisel.
Applications of Boasted Finishes
Due to its more uniform appearance, the boasted finish is often used in modern settings where a sleek yet textured look is desired.
Embrace the refined beauty and intricate craftsmanship of Gosford Quarries’ boasted and chiselled sandstone finishes. With boasted finishes, enjoy the sleek, uniform look marked by smooth surfaces and parallel lines, ideal for modern designs craving a textured yet polished appearance.
The Classic Elegance of Chiselled Finishes
What is a Chiselled Finish?
Chiselled finishes feature finely and carefully sculpted textures on the stone’s surface, usually more detailed than other finishes.
Where to Use Chiselled Finishes
This finish is well-suited for high-end commercial properties and luxury residential projects that seek a sense of classical elegance.
Delve into the classic elegance of chiselled finishes, where every detail is meticulously sculpted, offering a distinguished style perfect for enhancing luxury residential and high-end commercial projects. Using Sparrow Pecked Sandstone Finishes in Architecturural and Landscaping Projects
Sparrow Pecked Sandstone Finishes can be executed in both ‘Rough Sparrow Pecked’ and ‘Fine Sparrow Pecked’ Sandstone Finishes.
Stonemasons use a range of pointed, flat or pitching chisels in general for splitting, shaping and profiling sandstone.
Sparrow Pecking is one of a range of traditional surface finishes as would be described as a ‘pointed’ pecked texture, created generally by a pointed chisel uniformly across the surface of a masonry piece.
The texture of the finish can vary greatly due to the technique, skills and type of chisel used so a representative sample or photograph is required to accurately replicate this finish for restoration work.
Rough or Heavy Sparrow Pecking Sandstone Finish
Rough or heavy Sparrow Pecking features shorter, more frequent pick or pitted marks. This Sandstone Finish is often applied to a split finish to add extra texture and roughness to the face of the stone.
See an example of a Rough or Heavy Sparrow Pecking Finish below.
Fine or Light Sparrow Pecking Sandstone Finish
Fine or Light Sparrow Pecking Sandstone Finish features a uniformly roughed, etched sandstone surface. Usually, the masonry chisel (or ‘point’) is pointed at 90 degrees to the surface in this sandstone finish, and smaller, more refined ‘picks’ or pitted marks are patterned uniformly on the surface.
See an example of a Fine or Light Sparrow Pecking Finish right.
The Sparrow Pecked Sandstone Finish can be applied on the surface of Diamond Sawn (far more smooth and sophisticated finish), Gang Sawn (more rustic surface), and Hydrasplit (machine “guillotine” split surface) sandstone products.
The Sparrow Pecked Finish is applied to the all these Sandstone Finishes (textures) as the last refinement of the sandstone product.

Sparrow Pecked Finishes in Modern Contemporary Sandstone Homes, Buildings & Contemporary Architecture
Sparrow-Pecked Sandstone Finishes do not necessarily have to be featured exclusively in heritage restorations.
A Sparrow Peck Finish is perfect for contemporary architecture and modern sandstone homes where you would like a traditional heritage feel or unique texture when viewing and experiencing the buildings, particularly externally.
So, if you are looking to incorporate this bold and classic heritage finish into your next design or if you have existing heritage stonework you need restoring or re-created, get in touch with the sandstone experts: Gosford Quarries 02 8585 8282.

Sparrow Pecked Sandstone Finish and Ashlar Walling
A Sparrow Pecked Sandstone Finish can often be applied to an ‘ashlar’ finish. An ‘ashlar walling’ is a masonry term used to describe Sandstone Walling in a facade, retaining and landscaping garden walls.
In masonry terms, an ‘ashlar wall’ has finely cut and profiled Sandstone Blocks with even faces and square edges with thinner joints. The blocks are mostly rectangular in shape however any shape may be applicable if it includes arches, cornices or irregular joint patterns.
Traditionally, these walls are laid in parallel courses and feature continuous horizontal and vertical joint lines, as in the image right.
Ashlar Walling may also be a ‘Veneer’ when sandstone is used as a Cladding and not Solid Block Walling. This reduces the cubic volume (the thickness) of sandstone blocks thereby reducing the cost of sandstone architectural projects.
Ashlar walls may be finished in a variety of masonry finishes, ‘Rock Faced’ (where they feature rough or rustic Sandstone Finishes), Sparrow Pecked or Convict Picked surfaces, Chisel broached finishes and Smooth Finishes.
All the above textures can be further enhanced by using a ‘draft margin’ to the perimeter of the stone to highlight the Chisel or Rock Faced aced textures. The margins can be smooth or chiselled lightly to create a different but complementary texture of the stone edges.
You can see this particular Sparrow Pecked Finish on the image right.
In antiquity, ashlar walls date back to prehistoric Greece and Crete and even the Bronze Age show us evidence of ashlar masonry construction.

Sandstone Random Walling
Sparrowpecked Random Walling or ‘Crazy’ Pattern Masonry is the antithesis of ashlar walling, featuring a series of irregular or ‘random’ shaped stones used in combination to create Sandstone Walling.
In this walling style, the joints are ‘discontinuous’, where randomly shaped, coloured and textured Sandstone Blocks are haphazard in their apparent pattern within the wall’s structure. The shapes the mason chooses ‘randomly’, stacking and fixing the blocks into the wall as they build, dictate the pattern.
Of course, there is an art to the apparent ‘randomness,’ and a talented and skilled mason will make the randomly shaped pieces look natural and cohesive within the overall appearance of the walling.
In this respect, a Sandstone Ballast can be classified as Random Rubble Walling, and it may be selected and placed by a skilled ‘rubble’ stonemason.
Masonry Tools for Sparrow Pecked and Heritage Sandstone Finishes
To execute a Sparrow Pecked Sandstone Finish, the stonemason will use a pointed chisel and a tungsten-tipped chisel is usually preferred.
Nowadays, tungsten carbide-tipped hand chisels are used in stonemasonry with steel hammers, mallets or pneumatic air tools.
Stonemasons use a range of pointed, flat or pitching chisels to split, shape and profile sandstone.
Sparrow pecking is one of a range of traditional surface finishes. It would be described as a ‘pointed’ pecked texture, generally created by a pointed chisel uniformly across the surface of a masonry piece.
The texture of the finish can vary greatly due to the technique, skills and type of chisel used so a representative sample or photograph is required to replicate this finish for restoration work accurately.
