What Is Sandstone Cladding?
Sandstone Cladding is a sandstone ‘wall tile’ used to ‘dress’ or ‘cover’ a wall to appear as a solid sandstone wall. It can, therefore, be used as a wall decoration, feature wall, or to ‘clad’ entire walls of houses or commercial premises (both interior and exterior) so they appear as solid sandstone walls.
The terms Sandstone Cladding, Sandstone Facade, Sandstone Veneer, and sandstone Panelling describe and identify the same product. The sandstone product terms are used interchangeably to describe any product that can have a different texture and adheres or attaches to an existing substrate (existing structure).

A substrate is a wall that holds the cladding up.
Cladding is not load-bearing typically – the way the weight is transferred back.
On a concrete wall, for example, sandstone cladding becomes a decorative facade and hence is not structural; the concrete wall is.
The mechanical installation clips used to affix the cladding to a wall take the weight of the cladding stone. This weight is typically transferred down (load bearing).
In the city, sandstone cladding will mostly not be load-bearing. Sandstone cladding is very popular in our major Australian cities today, particularly Sydney and Melbourne.
100% Australian Sandstone Cladding from Gosford Quarries is a way to have the beauty and aesthetic of sandstone walling in a convenient facade application that instantly adds value to your project
Australian sandstone cladding is a cost-effective way to lift and position a commercial or residential premise as a premium or boutique space integrating different textures, colours and Sandstone Finishes into any design.
Mechanical Clip Fixing Vs Glue Fixing for Sandstone Cladding
Gosford Quarries do not recommend glue fixing for sandstone cladding.
You can glue fix if the sandstone cladding is being installed internally. Generally, though, moisture becomes an issue. Regardless, some people still want to use glue fixing.
ASAA (The Australian Stone Advisory Association) recommend mechanical clips as best practice in their guidelines.

Sandstone Colour Range Options In Sandstone Wall Cladding
Traditionally, and popular, is the iconic Gosford Quarries Medium Brown Sandstone Colour Range. This is one of the most popular and most widely used sandstone colour ranges, so much so that when people think of sandstone, they visualise the medium brown sandstone in their mind’s eye. People ‘see’ and ‘think of’ sandstone in this colour range.
Not many Australian sandstone supply companies have access to traditional iconic-looking Gosford Sandstone characterised by its rich banding, hues and variation. It is in this look and appearance, so recognisable that the good name of Gosford Quarries Sandstone has become synonymous with actual Gosford Sandstone.
With an emphasis on quality and continuous testing of our sandstone for durability, be aware that if it is not Gosford Quarries Sandstone, it is not “Gosford Sandstone”.

Stunning Wall Cladding in Sydney
Gosford Quarries offers export-quality Natural Stone Cladding to Landscapers, landscape designers, architects, homeowners and builders.
Australian natural Sandstone Cladding is highly sought-after due to its natural fire resistance and thermal and acoustic properties of this natural material.
Sandstone Wall Cladding is an ideal way to add value to your existing property or create a point of difference. It acts as a beautiful contrast to garden and landscape designs.
Gosford Quarries offers the highest-quality 100% Australian Sandstone wall cladding across the country, and our processing techniques ensure the stone’s integrity remains intact.
Whether you are in the market for Sandstone Cladding in Sydney or looking for Stone Wall Cladding in Melbourne or Brisbane, Gosford Quarries has showrooms across Australia to help you decide, inspire your designs and provide expert advice about using sandstone in your residential and commercial projects.
100% Australian Sandstone Cladding
for Interior Design and Interior Walling
As Architects become more adventurous and design trends align with opportunities for a wider range of sandstone applications, a newer trend is using Sandstone Walling for bathroom builds and renovations as a feature wall or an entire design aesthetic to add character, colour and texture.
Sandstone is juxtaposed with and complements other design features, materials, textures and colours in bathroom design due to the organic nature of the natural stone.
Modern architecture and the ‘timelessness’ of sandstone, brought together and amalgamated, create visual interest, texture and depth often unparalleled when compared to other natural stone materials.

Bespoke Honed Sandstone Finish: Polished Perfection for a Custom Touch
This subtitle texture captures the essence of a refined, high-end Diamond-Sawn Finish. However, the buffing process removes minor lacerations from the diamond blades, emphasising the bespoke, polished quality that sets the honed finish apart. It highlights both the customisation aspect and the aesthetic appeal of a honed surface, making it clear that this option offers a unique, elegant look for discerning clients.
Sawn Cladding Product Specifications
Sawn cladding is available in a variety of thicknesses and sizes. The recommended thickness of cladding is determined by the application of the material (i.e., the substrate, height of the wall and the intended fixing mechanisms)
The preferred thickness for Cladding is 50mm as it accommodates the most versatility in size and design and allows the application of mechanical pins on walls above 2 meters in height.
Light-Weight Sawn Cladding Product Specifications
Gosford Quarries has developed a 20mm Sawn “Light-Weight” Cladding crafted to meet the needs of customers who value the look and appeal of sandstone but may not have the weight tolerance for a 50mm Sawn Cladding.
This non-load-bearing Cladding is designed for installations below 2 meters in height, ensuring safety and compliance with building standards. The 20mm Sawn Cladding Product is a lightweight superficial facade that provides a refined, minimalist look for contemporary designs.
Please Note:
Due to its thickness, the sawn 20 mm thick Cladding cannot be mechanically fixed, making it suitable for adhesive installation on low-level applications.

Sandstone Cladding and Sandstone Feature Walls Adding Value to Australian Homes
Do you want to transform or renovate your tired Australian home into a timeless Australian sandstone home with natural Sandstone Cladding that adds grace, elegance, and grandeur to your design?

Using Australian Sandstone Is One of the Easiest Ways to Add Value to Your Home
In recent years, we’ve seen a trend in Australian sandstone being specified by architects, designers and landscapers who are returning to classic natural stone but also thinking outside the box to incorporate Australian sandstone in contemporary finishes and modern homes.
Installing Sandstone Wall Cladding can not only beautify your beloved home but it will actually add to the market value of your home.
Sandstone Cladding will increase resale value in residential renovation projects when used as a wall-covering.
Sandstone Wall Cladding is a cost-effective way to renovate or change the facade of your home while increasing value; both perceived and actual.
The Benefits Of Sandstone Cladding As A Natural Stone Walling Material
Not only is sandstone beautiful, aesthetically pleasing and surprising, it is also thermally stabilising, regulates extremes of temperature to make your house cooler in summer or not as cold in winter, insulates as a sound dampener and brings the feeling of a strong connection to the land and a psychological grounding of feeling ‘placed and connected’ to our land.
Even more, sandstone has a lower maintenance need as a building material and is fireproof due to its geological and chemical composition.

Sandstone is a fire-resistant and heat resistant natural stone material.
As a weatherproofing natural stone, sandstone can also protect outdoors spaces and entertainment areas.
Environmentally Friendly, Sustainable 100% Australian Sandstone
For the environmentally aware and concerned, it is also a sustainable, 100% recyclable stone material. Sandstone is a winning product all-round!
Sandstone is long-lasting, almost timeless in its look (it does not date and remains in fashion throughout decoration cycles).
There are so many options of sandstone finishes, colours, sizes, etc, that any architect can create a perfect match for your current home or to any planned renovation.
Natural Stone Wall Cladding
Sandstone is a unique cladding solution as it’s not only available in a range of beautiful tones but also has an unparalleled variety of textures that can be nominated to complement any design and space.
The two most common rustic sandstone finishes for cladding are “split-faced” or “Hydrasplit” and Rockfaced Finishes.
The Rock-Faced and Hydrasplit Sandstone Cladding offer customers a classic and timeless textured, rough-face cladding that brings the warmth and texture of a natural stone face into any project.
The Rockfaced Sandstone Cladding, particularly, is highly sought-after for achieving Australian sandstone’s traditional and immediately recognisable texture in Cladding, Feature Walls, Fences, Walling, and Capping projects.
Gosford Quarries offers more contemporary cladding options, such as smooth Diamond-Sawn, Honed, and Bush-hammered Sandstone Finishes. These finishes are minimalist and offer subtlety and natural beauty.
Gosford Quarries Sandstone Cladding is available in a large variety of customisable sizes and thicknesses which make them ideal for internal and external cladding alike.
Sandstone Ballast Cladding
To achieve a rustic “dry-stack” ballast or “rubble” wall appearance, architects and homeowners choose our random square Ballast Cladding, which provides an organic, natural “Free-form” format sandstone cladding option.
The rustic “dry-stack” style has recently been adopted into modern designs as it integrates an organic raw form into a minimalist design, creating a synergy between contemporary architecture and timeless natural stone cladding materials.
No matter what the finish, a talented architect can utilise sandstone for the WOW factor in a residential or commercial build or renovation project (on existing walls). It is important to note that sandstone cladding can also be used as a standout winning feature in outdoor entertainment spaces by landscape architects as well.

How Can I Use Sandstone Wall Cladding in Residential and Commercial Architectural Projects?

Sandstone Cladding can also be used as a paving tile (in fact, the two are interchangeable terms, although thicker cladding is necessary for a Paving Tile; this is often called ‘Sandstone Flagging’).

Sandstone Cladding as a Landscaping and Building Product
Sandstone can be used for the foundations of buildings, both residential and commercial, for Sandstone Retaining Walls and Sandstone Fences, interior and exterior Feature Walls (like barbecue and entertainment areas), fire pits and fireplaces, sandstone pathways, walkways, driveways, house entrance paths, garden paths (applications like the popular Crazy Paving also available).
Using Sandstone Cladding for Sandstone Fences
Regarding Sandstone Fences, Sandstone Cladding can be used on Sandstone Columns, Piers and Posts (coupled with Sandstone Quoins in this case). Even stairs can have Sandstone Treads, faces (Facades), and Wall Cladding.

Whether you prefer a smooth, refined finish or a more rugged, natural look, sandstone can be tailored to suit your design vision. Gosford Quarries Sandstone Capping options will make any wall look complete.

Sparrow Pecked Cladding , Bushhammered Cladding & Custom/Bespoke Cladding

Sparrow Peck Cladding
Sparrow Pecked Cladding offers a unique and textured finish that brings a touch of natural, rustic charm to any architectural design. This distinctive cladding features a finely pitted surface created through a traditional hand-tooling technique, resembling the delicate markings of a sparrow’s beak.
Perfect for modern and heritage projects, Sparrow-Pecked Cladding highlights the natural beauty of sandstone, adding depth and character to walls and facades. It’s an ideal choice for those seeking a timeless, handcrafted look that complements various architectural styles.
Bushhammered Cladding
Bushhammered Cladding showcases a bold, textured finish that exudes strength and character. This technique involves striking the sandstone surface with a bush hammer, creating a rugged, uniform texture that enhances the stone’s natural appeal.
Ideal for both exterior and interior applications, bushhammered cladding provides excellent slip resistance, making it a practical and aesthetic choice for facades, pathways, and feature walls.
The robust, tactile surface of Bushhammered Cladding brings a sense of solidity and durability, perfectly blending modern architectural needs with the timeless beauty of sandstone.

functional terminologies relating to sandstone cladding.
The section of the page explains the industry, technical, visual and
functional terminologies relating to sandstone cladding.
What is a Sandstone Facade?
A simple definition of a sandstone facade is the overall appearance of Sandstone Cladding.
A Sandstone Facade is an external wall cladding applied to walls, usually to residential homes, apartment building blocks and commercial premises. However, such cladding can also clad a retaining wall, fence posts, columns, piers (pier cladding), etc.
Anything that has a ‘face’ can have a sandstone facade applied or ‘fixed’ to it.
In this light, a sandstone facade is the overall design and aesthetic of the side of a building.

Another layman’s term for a Sandstone Facade is Sandstone Panelling or Sandstone Panels.
Sandstone Wall Dressing is less common, but it is another descriptor you may hear used.
Sandstone Veneer is also interchangeable in this respect. However, a Sandstone Veneer (covered later) usually features much thinner Sandstone Walling Tiles and is not as thick as a traditional sandstone facade.
The versatility and almost limitless customisation of Australian Sandstone make Sandstone Facades, Sandstone Walling, a competitive and high-performing choice in so many aspects when choosing sandstone as your Natural Stone Walling material in any project.
Hotels can renovate their external fascia with a Sandstone Facade and increase their aesthetic appeal, positioning themselves in a perceived ‘higher market’. Sandstone has a boutique and visual signal of prestige and grandeur when it comes to these kinds of renovations and renewals.
Entertainment centres such as concert spaces, theatres, town halls, conference centres, auditoriums, and other public spaces can also be renewed with the latest architectural and contemporary designs using sandstone as a building and walling material.

The Economic and Budget-Friendly Choice: A Sandstone Facade
A Sandstone Facade as a renovation option is also a cost-effective and economical way to have a significant return on investment, aesthetically appealing building renewal and to add not only perceived higher value to any premises but actual value increases, usually a significant one, to any building or structure in the modern-day.
Architects love sandstone for its colour, hue, textural finishes, and sizing capabilities; it is an incredibly versatile material.
At Gosford Quarries, we have a wide range of sandstone colour ranges available as well, rendering possibilities limited only to the imagination of talented, leading Australian Architects.
Any customisation is possible when you deal with Gosford Quarries, ‘The Sandstone People Since 1922’.
In fact, not only is sandstone a ‘timeless’ stone material in that it is hardy, ages gracefully (and beautiful with its colour shifts in intensity and hue), is long-lasting.
Sandstone also stands up against trends and changes in modern-day design, mirroring its physical endurance and looking ‘ageless’ and ever-appealing against any contemporary architectural design, whether that design mirrors tradition, juxtaposes against it or creates a modern and completely contemporary approach in its architectural execution and aesthetic.

Sandstone Veneers
A Sandstone Veneer is a word for a thick product affixed to a substrate.
Like a Sandstone Facade, a Sandstone Veneer is a sandstone walling material used to execute architectural renovations where a stone veneer facade has been chosen as a building material.
Like a timber veneer, which is timber wrapped around something ugly, a sandstone veneer improves and enhances the aesthetic of a wall.
Distinguishing a Facade from a Veneer
You have a facade looking at the side of a house. Like a ‘western facade’ on plans, for example.
A veneer is a term to describe any material that covers anything structural. It is any product that covers a substrate.
Think of veneer as the clothes and the substrate as the body. Think of the cladding as a specific item, like a shirt.
In the case of sandstone, a veneer is the same product but a different terminology.
Sandstone Veneers are popular choices for internal residential and commercial walling projects.
Use Sandstone Veneers to renew internal living spaces and to lift and bring a new status and esteem to commercial premises and public spaces.
Other descriptors you will hear or see written to describe a Sandstone Veneer are Veneer Stone Cladding, Sandstone Cladding, Sandstone Wall Cladding and Sandstone Facade Cladding online, in industry and colloquially.
Sandstone Veneers are usually installed on walling where that wall is free standing or as a sandstone facade and walling choice where there are limitations of weight and load bearing on the structure of the wall.
Sandstone Veneers are another natural stone walling material choice and are affordable and budget-friendly due to their thinner profile.

Sandstone Panelling
Sandstone Panelling is another interchangeable term with Sandstone Cladding.
However, in terms of a visual aesthetic, sandstone panelling is a larger format design or profiled option of sandstone for artistic purposes.
An example would be large lobbies of multipurpose engraved sandstone CNC profiled panelling on the walls.
Sandstone Cladding vs Sandstone Panelling
Cladding is the umbrella term for any sandstone used as a wall covering.
Panelling is a specific cladding panel as individual sized piece, with engraving.
Panelling is also used as a singular term for a cladding piece.
